Sapienza’s collective Volume marks 25 years of the UN Women, Peace and Security Agenda

  • 13 March 2026

It is with great pleasure and deep intellectual satisfaction that we present the collective volume The United Nations “Women, Peace and Security” Agenda 25 Years after Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000). A Utopia that Can Still Change the World, edited by Raffaele Cadin, Valentina Zambrano and Luisa Del Turco.

Sergio Marchisio had the privilege of contributing an introduction entitled “Some Reflections on the Collective Work Dedicated to Women, Peace and Security.”

The volume reflects, in many respects, the structure and guiding principles of the Advanced Training Course “The Role of Women in Peace Processes and Conflict Mediation”, launched in 2017 at Sapienza University of Rome with the aim of supporting the implementation of Italy’s National Action Plans on the Women, Peace and Security agenda and of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000). The course, formally established under the direction of Marchisio within the Department of Political Sciences in 2018, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, has reached its IX edition in 2026.

This initiative was jointly conceived with the late Ambassador Francesca Tardioli, then Central Director for the United Nations and Human Rights at the Ministry. Her commitment was instrumental in the creation of the course and in fostering the involvement of the Association of Dependent Spouses of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Remembering her today is also a tribute to her dedication to multilateralism and to the academic community in which she had been formed.

The book offers both broad reflections on the Women, Peace and Security agenda and focused analyses of emerging issues, including the innovative topic of gender equality in new and evolving contexts.

We gratefully thank the editors and the authors for their contributions, which together form a composite picture of the engagement of the United Nations, national governments, and academic institutions in the implementation of the Security Council agenda in its various facets.
