OSL Project

OSL – “Outer Space Law for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development” is a Research Project aiming at advancing capacity-building and research on key concepts of space law, including sustainability and cooperation.

Project activities, carried out by the OSL Team within the Department of Political Sciences of Sapienza University of Rome, fall within the scientific cooperation between the University and the Italian Space Agency (ASI).

OSL Project is the way Sapienza University is strengthening its commitment in promoting international cooperation in the field of space law and spreading knowledge and expertise in space law and policy, as well as confirming its leading role in the field at national and international levels.

The Project, started in 2019, foresees capacity-building activities to support the development of national expertise and capacities in emerging space countries, with a focus on Africa, performed through webinars and online courses. In addition, it aims to disseminate research results widely, through the publication of scientific articles and periodic activity reports.

Main research areas refer to the sustainability of space activities through space law, regulatory frameworks of space activities of emerging African countries, international space cooperation between Italy and Kenya.

The latter research area is of utmost importance, considering the long-standing history of bilateral cooperation in the field, started in the early Sixties with the establishment of the Broglio Space Centre in Malindi (BSC) and lasting until today, after the conclusion of the 2016 Italy-Kenya Agreement on the BSC and its five Implementing Arrangements.

Finally, the Project represents an important tool for consolidating the relations between ASI, Sapienza University of Rome and Kenyan universities in order to engage in a collaboration in the field of space legal sciences, as it has been done in the engineering sector.
