Lo spazio è sempre più a rischio Far West: ora una legge globale è necessaria. Interview with Sergio Marchisio on La Stampa

  • 28 December 2023

🛰️ On 27 December 2023, the interview with Sergio Marchisio titled “Lo spazio è sempre più a rischio Far West: ora una legge globale è necessaria” has been published on the Italian newspaper La Stampa.

🚀 The journalist Paolo Travisi interviewed Sergio Marchisio after his involvement in the panel debate on “Geopolitics of space: the need for global law” within the New Space Economy European Expoforum which took place in Rome from 5 to 7 December 2023.

Despite the slogan “There is no Space B”, ancient geopolitical rivalries are emerging with the risk of turning space into a new Far West scenario. In the article, Sergio Marchisio emphasised the relevance of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty but also indicated the need of evolving the rules to address new challenges, such as the overcrowding of low Earth orbits and the upcoming Moon exploration activities. Notwithstanding the geopolitical challenges, Sergio Marchisio highlighted that the legal framework should be better assessed by States that may also agree on “strumenti più leggeri per trovare delle interpretazioni comuni a concetti chiave che sono ancora in larga parte non declinati o non precisamente applicati”.

Furthermore, Sergio Marchisio stressed the need of a domestic legislation that may bolster and support Italian companies, considering that Italian expertise covers all possible space activities and applications.
