Benefit, inclusion and partnership: key themes from Panel C at the IAF Symposium 2025

  • 19 February 2025

At the IAF Symposium 2025, which took place at the United Nations Office in Vienna, distinguished speakers discussed how emerging nations can be more effectively integrated into the global space sector.

Sergio Marchisio participated in Panel C – How to Embrace Emerging Countries in the Global Space Endeavour? and highlighted the importance of benefit, inclusion, and partnership as fundamental principles for ensuring that space activities serve all nations.

Legal frameworks like the UN Space Treaties and the 1996 Declaration on International Cooperation in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space for the Benefit and in the Interest of All States provide guidance, but they must evolve to meet today’s challenges. Bridging the gap between principles and reality requires stronger cooperation and concrete mechanisms, such as benefit indicators integrated into space projects, to ensure that all nations, regardless of their technological capacity, gain from global space activities.

Valuable insights were also shared by UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini, who moderated the discussion, Jorge Skinner-Klee Arenales (Guatemala’s Permanent Representative to the UN), Michal Brichta (Slovak Space Office – Industry Branch Director), Asanda Ntisana (Acting Managing Director for Earth Observations at the South African National Space Agency) and Lisa Vitaris (Director at Space Industry Association of Australia).
