For half a century, the European Space Agency (ESA) has been serving Europe as its space agency and inspiring its citizens. On 30 May 1975, the ESA Convention was signed by 10 founding Member States and has since now expanded to 23 Member States, three Associate Members, one Cooperating State and Cooperation Agreements with four other EU States. This anniversary year provides the opportunity to reflect not only on ESA’s past achievements, but even more so on its future perspectives.
To mark this historic milestone and celebrate ESA’s past, present and future through a stage show has been held at the ESA Headquarters on 18 June 2025. The story unfolds, an immersive journey in seven movements: Sequence 1 Foundation, 2 Science, 3 Taking up space, 4 Earth Applications, 5 Launchers, 6 Signature, 7 Future.
Signature: A symbolic moment of unity. One by one, European nations have renewed their commitment in space. Each signature reflected a shared sense of trust, continuity and common purpose in strengthening Europe’s future in space.
The evening gave us a sense of ESA accomplishments in the past 50 years of European cooperation in space, and we have been further inspired by how space activities touch every part of society.
As lawyers, we underline that ESA has played a significant and multifaceted role in the development and evolution of outer space law, both through its institutional practices and its active participation in international legal fora. As an intergovernmental organization, the Agency represents a model of peaceful, cooperative space governance, bringing together the efforts and resources of its European member states. ESA’s legal framework and operational principles have not only influenced European space activities but have also contributed to the interpretation and implementation of broader principles of international space law.
In this context, the role of the European Centre for Space Law (ECSL) assumes its full significance. Established under the auspices of ESA, the ECSL has become a cornerstone in the promotion of education, research, and dissemination of knowledge in the field of space law. Through its wide range of initiatives —including the annual Summer Course on Space Law and Policy, the Practitioners’ Forum, and the Moot Court Competition — the ECSL has contributed to shaping generations of legal scholars, practitioners, and policymakers. It serves as a platform for fostering dialogue between academia, institutions, and the private sector, and plays a key role in capacity building, particularly by engaging students and young professionals from across Europe and beyond. In doing so, the ECSL not only advances legal literacy in space matters but also ensures that the foundational principles of international space law are understood, debated, and implemented in line with contemporary challenges, such as commercialization, sustainability, and security in outer space.
